The Foundation engaged in direct charitable activities designed to ameliorate conditions among poor and distressed persons in the geographic region of Southern Indiana. The Foundation targeted its charitable assistance to addressing the particular needs of specific classes of distressed individuals within the larger class of indigent persons. One program focused on the disabled veterans among the indigent individuals of Southern Indiana. Pursuant to that program, the Foundation purchased a van on behalf of an indigent, disabled veteran to assist that individual with the specific problems they faced as a result of their financial needs and disability. The Foundation's officers directly (1) identified the charitable recipient; (2) contacted car dealerships on the charitable recipient's behalf and identified the best dealership from which to make the purchase; (3) negotiated price and other matters with the car dealership on the charitable recipient's behalf; and (4) purchased the van directly from the car dealership on the charitable recipient's behalf and furnished it to the charitable recipient.The other program focused on the class of distressed elderly individuals among the indigent individuals of Southern Indiana. Pursuant to that program, the Foundation paid to have insulation installed under the floors of an indigent, elderly widow's home to assist that individual with the specific problems they faced as a result of not having sufficient knowledge or resources to arrange for the necessary repairs of her home. The Foundation's officers directly (1) identified the charitable recipient; (2) contacted service providers on the charitable recipient's behalf and identified the best company from which to purchase the services from; (3) negotiated price and other matters with the service provider on the charitable recipient's behalf; and (4) purchased the insulation and installation services from the insulation company on the charitable recipient's behalf and ensured its proper installation.
